Summer Solstice – NORFOLK

Rockstone Ley, the final lap!

After several years of pilgrimaging along the Rockstone ley from Shingle Street in Suffolk, visiting Churches, ancient Abbeys and the Rockstone itself, we are finally reaching the point where it goes out to sea on Walcott beach in Norfolk.

Sunrise on Walcott Beach. Some intrepid souls may like to join Pam and I in Walcott, to watch the sunrise on the beach at 4 am on 21st. We are staying at the Poachers Pocket in Bacton, which is only a 7 minute walk from the spot at Walcott Gap where the line passes out to sea. We can have breakfast at the Poachers Pocket afterwards.

The Pilgrimage proper will start at 10 am from where we left off last time, at St Peters Church, Brumstead. We shall visit three churches, all a few miles apart, and all quite surprisingly large, considering how close they are to each other. St Peters is next to a mushroom farm and the farmer has requested that we park along the verge but well off the road because of passing farm vehicles. We liked the acoustics here.

Next we go to St Mary’s East Ruston on the road to Walcott, with parking in two laybys. The churchyard is rather overgrown and we couldn’t go inside because it was locked. We will make sure it is open for us.

The third church is All Saints Walcott, an imposing building of flint and stone with a large tower. It is well cared for and the most used and loved we felt, it feels spacious inside with long windows and a very simple but beautiful font.

Then we will go on to the beach at Walcott Gap, and hopefully the sun will shine and the tide will allow us to go on the sand and commune with the energy, have a picnic, swim or whatever we choose to do. There are several eating places for lunch for those not picnicking.
