Spring Equinox Pilgrimage

Thursday 19 March

A visit to Saffron Walden, Essex, its ancient labyrinth and historic town. The labyrinth on the common in Saffron Walden is the largest turf labyrinth in the country and thought to be very ancient, though its origins are unknown. It is a mile long, so some may not wish to walk the whole of it. It has been beautifully kept and looked after through the centuries. There is a park bench next to it for rest breaks or observers!

We will meet at 10 am in the Courtyard Tiptree Tea Room, Rose and Crown Walk, which is near the Car Park on the corner of the Common (The Common Short Stay Car Park C10 1JG) Then we will visit and walk the labyrinth, which, weather permitting could take some time. Afterwards, we shall walk through the Medieval town, winding up hill to the 12th century Castle, visiting on the way the Church of St Mary the Virgin, the largest Parish Church in Essex, with its imposing spire. The earliest part dates from 1250 but the majority was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style in the 15th century. There are nine medieval brasses and fine stained-glass windows. The size of the church points to the wealthy saffron trade at the time.

Just before the Castle we come to the oldest purpose-built Museum in the country, built by the Quakers in the 19th century. And at the top of the hill, the castle, built by Geoffry de Mandeville in 1130 – 40, and now a ruin. Sadly, we can’t go inside because of repair work, but we can enjoy its surroundings and position on the hill. We shall close the pilgrimage here. Any who wish can then visit the Museum if still open, or explore more of the town. Meeting: 10 am at the Courtyard Tiptree Tea Rooms, Rose and Crown Walk.
