Ely – Autumn Equinox Pilgrimage

24/09/2020

Celebrating the sign of Libra in the Wheel of Life
Thursday Sept 24th 2020

We will start by the waterfront and wind our way up the hill from the River Great Ouse towards Ely Cathedral, the “Ship of the Fens”.

Our Pilgrimage will include walking the LABYRINTH in the Cathedral.

Arrivals and parking:
We will meet outside the Cutter Inn (postcode CB7 4BN, marked “Cu” on the map attached to this email). at 10.30am.

Arriving by train: The Inn is a quarter of mile walk from the railway station (see map).
Arriving by car: Nearby parking (see map) is possible at:

The Ship Lane Car Park (Free, long stay, Toilets), has pedestrian access to the riverside. Angel Drove & the Dock Pay & Display Parks (£3 for the day) are close to the Railway Station.

Before Lunch
We will start our Pilgrimage at 11.00am at the curve of the river outside the Cutter Inn.
We will then wind our way uphill through the Jubilee Gardens, and Ely Park (see map). The Park offers us a splendid view of the south side of the Cathedral and the monastic buildings surrounding it. We will then swing round to approach the Galilee Porch & west doors of the Cathedral.

Just inside the doors sits the Labyrinth. Fortunately, it is not necessary to pay to enter the Cathedral to access the Labyrinth. We hope there will be time – depending on numbers – for at least some of us to walk the Labyrinth before lunch.

Lunch
The Almonry Restaurant, right next to the Cathedral will be open, for those who wish to eat lunch there (see below). They do sandwiches & baked potatoes as well as special hot dishes, soup etc. Otherwise bring a picnic which we can eat in the gardens.

After Lunch
We will have time to explore the Cathedral and its environs although we will not be able to sing unfortunately, and some people may wish to walk the Labyrinth, if this has not been possible beforehand. We will come together to close the pilgrimage at 4 pm

Day entry to the Cathedral is £8 – more if you wish to visit the excellent Stained-Glass Museum or take a Tower Tour. This day ticket can be converted into an Annual Pass at no extra cost. Ask about this when you purchase your ticket. More information at www.elycathedral.org.

NOTE: It takes c 15 minutes to walk downhill from the Cathedral to the Inn & the Railway Station
