A visit to Kenninghall in Norfolk
Kenninghall is a charming village north west of Diss, with a shop, two pubs and a large Church. Described on the Norfolk Churches website as “a large, comfortable, self-sufficient place” it is an ideal place for us to spend a day celebrating the Equinox and the almost full moon in Libra. It has an interesting history, connected to Boudicca and later two other English Queens. Lately it has been in the news because a fire broke out in a field, which spread rapidly destroying two houses. It could have been so much worse. The speedy reaction of the farmer with the help of eight fire engines, managed to put it out before it could destroy any more homes, or reach the wood of fifteen thousand or so trees, planted by the villagers themselves.
With local resident and number one tree planter Lucy Whittle as our guide, we shall walk to these woods, passing the spot where the fire raged, stopping if we wish, to offer our healing thoughts. Lucy will tell us about the woods and the Land Trust which was started by local residents to build and maintain it. Part of the wood is an orchard with ancient breeds of apples and pears, with wonderful names like Tom Putt, Harling Hero and Norfolk Beauty. There will be time in the woods for singing, dancing, tuning in and enjoying the space in our Gatekeeper way. There is also a large circular wattle and daube hut providing shelter should we need it. We can walk as much or as little as we wish, but twenty minutes is minimum.
Lunch will be in the Market Street Café. Afterwards we can walk to St Mary’s Church, an imposing building up on a hill, where we can see evidence of Kenninghall’s royal past.
Kenninghall Palace, now sadly demolished, was a favourite retreat of Eliabeth 1st and her splendid Shield of Arms, presented to her by the people of Kenninghall, now hangs in the North Chappel. More on this and Kenninghall Palace on the day.
We shall meet at 10.30. in the Market Place Café, in the middle of Kenninghall, and also have lunch here. There is good parking in the small square, outside the Post Office and the White Horse pub. Latest finishing time 4 pm
