World Peace Mission Conference 2017

25/02/2017 - 26/02/2017

Penzance, recently declared a new world-class destination by the New York Times, is hosting the important World Peace Mission annual conference in February. The event will be held at The Queens Hotel, Penzance, on the weekend of 25th – 26th February.

The conference brings together a variety of international speakers and film-makers, addressing the theme of working towards peace in a world of extreme conflict. Speakers include Jon James and Camilla Carr, who were kidnapped in Chechnya by armed rebels. Held hostage for 14 months in a dark dungeon, they experienced everything from threat of execution, multiple rape and mental torture to moments of compassion and kindness. Having recently appeared in the series, “Captives”, they will be talking on forgiving those who violate others? Other speakers include Archpriest Father Benedict Ramsden from the Eastern Orthodox tradition, speaking on “The Possession of Peace”; Mark Kidel will show a documentary film of the life of Ravi Shankar; Sonja Venturi, both a civil rights lawyer and a musician, describes how devotion to Sai Baba has shaped her values and work; Rev Leonora van Gills, an Inter-Faith Minister, will describe how we can accomplish world peace peacefully and not through force.

The conference brings a focus to Penzance’s development as an important cultural centre now coming into its own. The far west of Cornwall has always attracted individual voices not afraid to challenge unproductive habits and intergroup tensions. Conflicts around the world are often grounded in religious differences. The World Peace Mission calls for widespread tolerance and compassion based on thoughtful consideration of the gift of life and the sanctity of nature. Many of the speakers at this, our third, conference either follow a spiritual teacher or a particular spiritual path and want to bring together these sometimes disparate voices to challenge the widespread view that resolution of conflict can only be achieved by force. Rather, we ask people to follow the poet, Wallace Stevens, where he says that the world is Presence and not Force; we feel the power of love transforms the presence into peace and humanity has the power to do this.

The theme for the 2017 conference is “The Power of Love for Peace”. The World Peace Mission and the teachings of Kriya Yoga was founded 20 years ago by a Cornish-born woman, Swami Aliyananda Paramahansa.

Saturday 9.00 am for registration, start 10.00 am – 7.30 pm, Sunday 10.00 am – 5.00 pm.

Two-day tickets are priced at £130, which includes buffet lunch, tea and coffee.
